In keeping with the way the scale was originally constructed and validated, and because each of the items indicated a fairly profound lack of self-acceptance, participant were labeled as having IHP if they "agreed" or "strongly agreed" with any of the 9 items (0 = no IHP, 1 = IHP) (from Meth Study, Herrick, 2013, It Gets Better: Resolution of Internalized Homophobia Over Time and Associations with Positive Health Outcomes Among MSM).

I felt alienated from myself because of being gay/bisexual.
